Fibroids: Tests and Monitoring

Fibroids are benign growths composed of smooth muscle cells as well as connective tissue in the uterus. They can vary significantly in size and can be as small as a grain of rice or as large as a melon. Over 99% of all cases are non-cancerous.

At gynaecologist.org.uk, we provide fibroids testing and monitoring package, which includes:

  • Consultation with a gynaecologist
  • Pelvic and abdominal examination
  • Blood testing, which involves complete blood count and serum ferritin
  • Pelvic ultrasound scan
BOOK AN APPOINMENT

Generally, our gynecologist consultants perform the following tests to identify and monitor fibroids:

  • Ultrasound This non-invasive, reliable technique uses sound waves to produce clear pictures of the ovaries and uterus. Transvaginal ultrasounds are highly effective, with 90 to 99% detection rates. However, they may miss smaller or subserosal fibroids.
  • Saline hysterosonography This ultrasound procedure involves injecting sterile saline into the uterus to expand it and make it easier to view the uterine lining and submucosal fibroids.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed 3D pictures of the uterus. Although more costly than ultrasound, MRIs offer valuable insights into fibroids' size, number and position. They are beneficial for individuals with bigger uteruses or those approaching menopause.
  • Hysteroscopy This procedure involves inserting a small, lighted telescope known as a hysteroscope into the uterus. It enables the doctor to see the fibroids directly.
  • Hysterosalpingography This is an X-ray procedure where dye is used to highlight the fallopian tubes and uterine cavity. It helps identify any blockages, or ensure that the tubes are open.
  • Laparoscopy This is a minimally invasive procedure that allows for the detection of fibroids on the uterus surface, normally before surgical removal.
  • Complete blood count (CBC) A blood test that can detect anemia, which might be present in those who have experienced heavy menstrual bleeding.
