Ovarian Cancer Screening

Ovarian cancer screening involves medical tests designed to detect ovarian cancer in women who don’t have any symptoms. At gynaecologist.org.uk, we provide various ovarian cancer screening options which include:

  • Pelvic examination: Our consultants will conduct a physical examination of the reproductive organs to check for abnormalities or potential signs of cancer.
  • CA125 blood test: This test measures the levels of the CA125 protein in the blood. Increased CA125 levels may sometimes indicate ovarian cancer.
  • Transvaginal ultrasound: Using ultrasound waves, this test produces images of the uterus and ovaries to enable doctors to detect any unusual growths or structural changes in the ovaries.
  • MRI scan: This employs a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed internal images that help detect possible ovarian cancer signs.

These ovarian cancer tests are not routinely recommended for all women. However, those at higher risk, such as individuals with a family history of the condition, may find regular screenings more beneficial.

Who Can Undergo Ovarian Cancer Screening?

Ovarian cancer screening is usually recommended for women who?

  • Have a family history of ovarian cancer.
  • Have undergone fertility treatments, such as IVF or used fertility drugs.
  • Have reached menopause
  • Are over the age of 45 and experiencing new-onset pelvic pain.

Who Might Benefit from Ovarian Cancer Screening?

Currently, ovarian cancer testing is suitable only for women who are at high risk. You should thus consider screening if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You have BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations.
  • You think you may be carrying one of these gene mutations.

If you’re unsure about your risk level, it’s important to consult your GP or gynaecologist. They can provide guidance and, if needed, recommend further evaluation and counselling.

What to Expect During Ovarian Cancer Screening

  • Initial consultation: Before undergoing the screening, you first have a consultation with a consultant. He/she will review your medical history and ask about your symptoms.
  • The scan: The scan usually lasts around 30 minutes.
  • Review of screening results: After the procedure, your provider will review and discuss the results with you during your visit. If they are normal, your doctor will reassure you and may recommend routine screenings in the future.

If screening results suggest the possibility of ovarian cancer, additional diagnostic procedures may be required. These may involve advanced imaging tests and a biopsy, where a small tissue sample from the ovaries is removed and analyzed under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

Generally, the ovarian cancer screening process is painless and quick. Be sure to follow the instructions given and discuss your concerns before and during the procedure.
