Why is a Pre-Pregnancy Health Check Important?

Therefore, our skilled gynaecologists in London will assess your overall health and address any underlying concerns—some of which you may not even be aware of—to minimize potential complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

When to Undergo a Pre-Pregnancy Health Check

If you’re experiencing any symptoms or health concerns before trying to conceive, booking a consultation as soon as possible is recommended. Even if you don’t have any worries, a general health check is recommended up to a year before planning to get pregnant.

What Does a Pre-Pregnancy Assessment Include?

Certain health problems that lead to abnormal Pap smear results can cause uncomfortable symptoms, including:Your pre-pregnancy consultation will involve a health and lifestyle review where your doctor will discuss factors that may impact your pregnancy.

  • Gynaecological history: A review of your menstrual cycle, Pap smear results, history of STDs, and contraceptive methods.
  • Obstetric history: This will be reviewed if you have been pregnant.
  • Medical history: Guidance on managing pre-existing conditions that may cause complications during pregnancy. If necessary, you can be referred to a specialist.
  • Vaccination record: Carry with you your record of immunization if you have one.
  • Medications and allergies: Create a list of medications you take, including dosages.

During your pre-pregnancy check-up, your private gynaecologist may perform several essential examinations to assess your overall health. These include:

  • Physical examination: Checking your weight, height, and blood pressure.
  • Pap smear: Screening for cervical cancer, cervical pre-cancerous changes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. This is recommended if it has been over a year since your previous Pap smear.
  • Abdomen, vagina, and breast examination: Checking for lumps or abnormalities that could complicate pregnancy or childbirth.
  • Vaginal swab: Testing for infections such as yeast infections or trichomoniasis—a sexually transmitted infection with symptoms like redness, itching, discharge, and burning.
