Coil Removal

While using a coil or intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception, there may come a time when it needs to be removed or replaced. For most women, the removal process is similar to the fitting procedure. At gynaecologist.org.uk, we provide coil removal services with short notice appointments.

A coil is a small, T-shaped contraceptive implanted in a woman’s uterus in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies. IUDs come in two types: copper and hormonal. This method is generally considered one of the most effective forms of reversible birth control, with fewer than 1 in 100 females using an IUD successfully conceiving each year.

Coil Removal Procedure

You will meet with a senior specialist nurse experienced in family planning during your appointment. They will discuss the procedure in detail, suggest pain relief options, explain your choices for future birth control if you wish to avoid pregnancy and address any other questions or concerns. They will also outline any potential risks before proceeding to ensure that the procedure is conducted with your informed consent.

To remove the coil, your healthcare provider will insert a device known as a speculum to hold the vaginal walls open. This also enables them to locate the IUD threads. Using forceps, they will carefully grasp the strings and gently pull the coil out.

An ultrasound-guided removal may be necessary in rare situations where the IUD threads are not visible. This procedure will, however, be addressed separately.

When Should You Consider Removing a Coil?

Coil removal can be done at any time, depending on your needs. Common reasons for removal include:

  • Planning to get pregnant.
  • The coil lifespan has come to an end.
  • Experiencing unwanted side effects.
  • Switching to a different birth control method.

In most cases, IUD removal is a quick and painless procedure when performed by a trained professional. Hysteroscopy is rarely required unless the coil has been left in place for decades after menopause.
