A coil is a small, T-shaped contraceptive implanted in a woman’s uterus in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies. IUDs come in two types: copper and hormonal. To remove the coil, your healthcare provider will insert a device known as a speculum to hold the vaginal walls open. This also enables them to locate the IUD threads. Using forceps, they will carefully grasp the strings and gently pull the coil out.
An ultrasound-guided removal may be necessary in rare situations where the IUD threads are not visible. This procedure will, however, be addressed separately.
