Colposcopy Procedure

When the results of the smear test appear abnormal, the doctor may recommend a colposcopy. The colposcopy procedure involves using a microscope and a bright light to closely check the cervix for the presence of abnormalities or possibly pre-cancerous cells. Sometimes, a biopsy might be conducted to confirm the outcomes.

At gynaecologist.org.uk, we provide all-inclusive gynecology services, including colposcopy, at our London clinic.

Who undergoes a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is usually recommended for women with:

  • An abnormal smear test result
  • A prior HPV-positive diagnosis
  • A cervix with an abnormal appearance
  • A history of cervical abnormalities
  • Symptoms of cervical cancer

Our colposcopy services

A colposcopy is an outpatient procedure used to assess the cervix under a bright light and magnification for any abnormalities. During the appointment, your consultant may recommend removing cells for histological analysis or performing treatment if necessary.

Our standard colposcopy package at gynaecologist.org.uk includes the following:

  • A consultation with a specialist gynecologist.
  • A thorough medical history review.
  • The colposcopy procedure.
  • Detailed explanations of the outcomes.
  • A comprehensive written report sent to you and your GP.

Additional tests and services

These services can as well be included in your colposcopy package:

  • Cervical smear
  • HPV sub-typing tests.
  • Biopsy
  • Histological analysis
  • Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) with histological analysis.
  • Follow-up consultation.

What happens before colposcopy?

Before your colposcopy, the doctor will ask you when your last period began. If your appointment falls during your period, the procedure may need to be rescheduled. Therefore, it’s important to inform your consultant in advance.

In addition, your consultant will thoroughly discuss the procedure with you and address any questions or concerns you have. It’s advisable to refrain from sexual activity and the use of tampons or vaginal creams or drugs for 24 hours before the procedure.

What does colposcopy involve?

During the colposcopy, you will be asked to lie in a chair that has padded leg supports. Similar to a smear test, a speculum will be gently inserted inside the vagina and opened to provide a clear view of the cervix. Your consultant will then use a colposcope, a specialized microscope, to examine the cervical cells.

If any abnormal cells are detected, your consultant may remove them immediately using a procedure called Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ). The whole process typically lasts 10 to 20 minutes, although you might be required to remain at the clinic until the local anesthetic effects wear off.

Additionally, a biopsy (removal of a small tissue sample) may be taken to help diagnose any potential issues.

What to expect after colposcopy

The duration of the colposcopy procedure is similar to a standard smear test. Moreover, you’ll be able to return home soon after your appointment.

If a biopsy or excision is performed, you may experience slight bleeding or discharge. It’s thus advisable to wear a panty liner for one or two days following the procedure. Once the results are out, your consultant will contact you. If the biopsy reveals that further treatment is necessary, you will be required to go back to have abnormal cells removed. You will be informed what to expect at that time.
