Postnatal Care

The postnatal refers to the period between the first 6 to 8 weeks after childbirth. During this time, postnatal care should seamlessly extend the support a woman receives throughout her pregnancy, labor, and delivery. It should also consider her unique requirements and preferences and aim to foster a nurturing environment where specialists guide families in caring for both the baby and themselves. This care also helps them recognize and address anything that seems unusual.

Midwifery care might be provided for part or all of the postnatal period. If there are no identified physical, social, emotional, or psychological concerns, women are normally transferred to the care of their GP by 10-14 days after birth. Planning and coordinating care based on the specific needs of the mother and baby is crucial, and all involved professionals should be informed of these plans.

If both you and your newborn are well, and depending on the nature of your delivery, you will be discharged to go home within 6 to 24 hours following delivery. While at home, the midwifery team will provide ongoing support, starting with an initial visit from a midwife. Together, you will plan any necessary follow-up visits. You will also receive contact information for emergencies or to ask questions about your or your baby’s health.

Should you have additional concerns not addressed here, feel free to ask your midwife for more guidance.
