Recommended Foods to Eat During Pregnancy

To support your health and your baby’s development, consider including these foods in your pregnancy diet:

Vegetables

Carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, cooked greens, and red sweet peppers (rich in potassium and vitamin A).

Fruits

Cantaloupe, mangoes, oranges, honeydew, prunes, apricots, bananas, and red or pink grapefruit (full of potassium).

Dairy

Skim or 1% milk, fat-free or low-fat yogurt, and soymilk (sources of potassium, calcium, and vitamins A and D).

Grains

Cooked or ready-to-eat cereals (rich in iron and folic acid).

Proteins

Beans, nuts, peas, seeds, lean beef, pork, lamb, and fish like sardines, salmon, herring, trout, and Pollock.

Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

For safety, avoid consuming the following foods while pregnant:

  • Unpasteurized milk and products made from unpasteurized milk (such as soft cheeses like feta, brie, queso blanco and fresco, Camembert, or blue-veined cheeses unless made with pasteurized milk).
  • Hot dogs and luncheon meats unless heated till steaming hot before consuming.
  • Undercooked or raw eggs, seafood, and meat, including sushi made with raw fish. Cooked sushi is safe.
  • Refrigerated smoked seafood
