Vulvoscopy Procedure

A vulvoscopy is a procedure that involves the use of a telescope known as a colposcope to assess the vulval skin. It is usually performed to check for symptoms like pain, itchiness, or irritation and to check for any signs of vulvar pre-cancer. The process itself is painless, though the stain application may cause a short-lived stinging feeling.

A biopsy will be performed if abnormal cells are found during the vulvoscopy.

In general, a vulvoscopy is recommended for women experiencing vulvar symptoms such as:

  • Persistent vulvar itching
  • Vulvar pain or irritation

It is also suitable for those with abnormal signs, including:

  • Skin discoloration (brown, white, or dark areas)
  • Lumps
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain during sex

In addition, vulvoscopy is used to further examine conditions like lichen sclerosis or lichen planus and to rule out vulval pre-cancer resulting from the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
